While the Grand Prix series began with a bang last week, smaller competitions were happening around the United States with skaters who are looking to qualify for the U.S. Nationals in January. One of the skaters going through the qualification process is 2007 U.S. silver medalist Emily Hughes, who missed most of last season due to injury.

The endangered North Atlantic right whale (there are only 350 to 400 left in the world) got their name because they were considered the best (“right”) whale to hunt — they were very approachable and floated when killed. They range from 20 to 50 feet long, and can weigh 50 tons. Their double blowhole is often “V” shaped. The right whale can be identified by its lack of a dorsal fin, and the whitish bumps called callosities on its head. Whale-watchers are forbidden to get with in 500 yards of a North Atlantic Right Whale.
After many years of pirates, Englishman, Dutch, Spanish, Texans, and missionary attempts, the desert landscape and the unwelcoming indians defeated all. It was not until after World War II that a group of Southern Californians found that they could fly to La Paz and then travel by rutty roads to the shores of Mar de Cortes. It was a well-kept secret that gradually leaked out that the Sea of Cortes was teeming with fish and was well-protected. The weather was almost perfect. Since there were no roads, long yachts and private airplanes kept the beautiful ocean vistas exclusive. It was said to be the favorite of such well-known names as Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, Desi Arnaz and The Duke. In 1948 they built the hotel Las Cruces on the East Cape.
I have visited Cabo San Lucas many times. I went marlin fishing with my daughter. She caught a great big marlin and I caught a smaller one. It was a smaller boat which the Captain, his assistant, my daughter and myself had to ourselves. When I left shore, they told me that the captain I was with would definitely find the marlin. We were back in the harbor by 9 a.m. The last time I went I watched as the boats went by coming back from fishing. They had flags showing how many fish they had caught that day. There were many flags that day.
The whales live in cool to temperate ocean waters and have a tendency to stay near the surface. The Right Whales are located in the three main areas and those that live along the United States eastern coastline migrate to the south seasonally, every year. The pregnant whales travel to the coasts of Florida and Georgia to deliver their calves. Researchers are still trying to determine where the males and non pregnant females go during the winter, it has been determined that they leave the northern feeding grounds but do not travel to the same area that the pregnant whales do. This is something that is currently being studied (“Right Whales,” 2007).
Asked if any whales have bumped up against the boat during the website outings. Bruno said no. It’s not allowed to get that close to the whales anyhow. You have to stay many yards away by law”.
Of this group, only Anton Kink, his wife and daughter survived. Anton had helped his family to safety in a lifeboat. As the lifeboat was being lowered, his family cried out for him and he managed to leap into it.
If you are the type of person who easily get car sick, you are likely to experience much worse motion sickness in a boat. Hence, it would be really helpful to bring medicine for motion sickness. You may also bring extra snack food just in case you become hungry during the trip.
